Grok Bot usage meters jumped, Musk cited cost, then they rolled back

Many Grok Bot users hit their weekly limit early on November 1. Musk said serving costs were unsustainably high, and by November 2 meters were reported back to normal.

TL;DR: Over the weekend of October 31 and November 1, many Grok Bot users found their weekly usage meter jumping, some to 100 percent, with little or nothing running. On November 1, Elon Musk replied on X that the cost of serving Grok Bot "was unsustainably high relative to revenue." By November 2, users and Sawyer Merritt reported the meters were back to where they were. SpaceXSI has not, as far as we can find, published an explanation.

What happened

Grok Bot runs on a weekly usage allowance. The meter shows a percentage, and at 100 percent the bot stops until the meter resets or you buy extra credit. SpaceXSI's usage docs describe a weekly pool that refreshes each week (Usage limits).

Starting around October 31, users reported meters that leaped overnight. A bug thread about it was opened on the Cursor forum on November 1 (Cursor forum thread). On November 1, a user asked Musk for a usage reset because many people had run out fast. He replied: "The cost of serving Grok Bot was unsustainably high relative to revenue" (Musk's reply).

The reply gave no figures and did not say what had changed or whether anyone would get a reset. TechCrunch reported that Musk confirmed this was not a glitch (TechCrunch). Techcity Authority noted that several outlets read the past tense as a sign the faster drain was deliberate, and that SpaceXSI had not announced anything (Techcity Authority).

The rollback

On November 2, Sawyer Merritt posted that SpaceX "reset Grok Bot usage back to where it was before yesterday" (his post). Other users described the same thing, with one saying their meter went from about 15 percent back to 8 percent (user report).

A forum user also shared a support reply signed "Sam, SpaceXSI's SI Support Agent." It said the user may have hit "an issue in our system that has now been fixed," that their weekly limit "should be back to what it was before the issue," and that "usage limits are adjusted from time to time." The user posted it on November 3 UTC, so treat it as one person's account of a support message.

What is still unclear

  • Was it a bug or a deliberate change? Musk's wording points one way and the support message points the other. Neither is an official announcement.
  • Did limits change for good? Techcity Authority says a smaller group of users report each task now uses more of the allowance after the rollback. Those are user claims, and we could not check them (Techcity Authority).
  • Will anyone get a refund or reset? We have not seen an official statement on that.

Why it matters

Grok Bot is growing quickly. Fortune reports that SpaceX's Gwynne Shotwell said on the October 20 earnings call that Grok Bot had reached 800,000 paid weekly users, double the number in September (Fortune). Agents work through many steps per task, so heavy users can cost more to serve than a simple chat does. If you rely on Grok Bot for scheduled routines, check your usage view for your next reset date and don't assume the meter reading you saw over the weekend is final.

Related, and unconfirmed

Techcity Authority also reported a leak, from a prerelease build, of a prompt that would let users who hit 100 percent reset their limit by allowing their interactions to be used for training. The leaker said it is in testing and may not ship, and SpaceXSI has not commented. We treat it as a rumor.
