Grok Bot can pick up the phone for you. That is the pitch, anyway, and today it got its biggest megaphone yet.
On Tuesday afternoon Elon Musk posted "Try asking Grok @Bot to make calls!" (his post), quoting a demo from Sawyer Merritt. Within a few hours Musk's post had passed 1.2 million views.
What the demo shows
Merritt called it Grok Bot's "new calling feature" and described the flow (his post):
- You tell the Bot who to call and why.
- It handles the conversation for you and shows a real-time transcript while the call happens.
- If it needs something from you mid-call, a small answer box pops up. You type or pick a reply, and Grok relays it to the person on the line.
His post includes a 95-second video with the call audio. We are describing his account of it, not testing it ourselves.
Is it actually out?
This is the part to be careful about. As of Tuesday evening, the official Grok Bot changelog lists v0.78.1 (Oct 27) as the newest release, and none of its entries describe calls to outside phone numbers. There are no published release notes, pricing, plan requirements or supported countries for the feature yet.
So treat it as reported: shown working by users, promoted by Musk, not yet documented by xAI.
It is also not the first time it has come up. Musk said on Oct 25 that Grok Bot "can now call someone or a business for you" and send you a summary, as The Tech Signal reported. Since then, users have posted their own call stories, from asking an insurer about glass coverage to booking restaurant tables, some saying it seems to be US numbers only for now (The Daily Bot, Digg roundup). Those are individual accounts, not a confirmed rollout.
Why it matters
Phone calls are the last chore most AI assistants cannot touch. Hold music, phone trees, the business that has no web form: that is where an agent that can talk earns its keep. A live transcript plus a way to feed it answers mid-call is the right design, because it keeps you in the loop without making you hold the phone.
The open questions are the practical ones: whether the person who answers is told they are talking to an AI, whether calls are recorded, how calls count against usage limits, and who gets it when. We will update this when xAI or @grok says so officially.
If you have it
Keep the first calls narrow. Ask one question, say exactly which personal details the Bot may share, and read the transcript before you act on what it heard.
