TL;DR: On November 6, 2026, Cursor shipped Voice Chat with Agents: a realtime spoken conversation with an agent in the Agents Window, the IDE, on web, and in Cursor for iOS. Cursor says the voice layer runs on Grok Voice. This is separate from dictation (the older Voice Mode that only turns speech into text).
What Cursor shipped
Cursor's November 6, 2026 changelog and Voice chat docs describe a two-way call, not a voice-to-text shortcut. You talk, the agent talks back, and coding work can keep running in the same chat while you stay on the call.
According to Cursor:
- Start a call with the waveform button labeled Start voice chat when the agent is idle and the chat input is empty.
- The voice agent can hand work to the coding agent, answer questions about diffs and runs (read-only lookups), search earlier messages and calls with that agent, switch Project workers, and hang up when you are done.
- The coding agent can speak short progress notes while it works and a brief answer when it finishes. Full written replies still land in the chat.
- On iOS, you can say "Hey Siri, call Cursor" to start a call with a new agent, and mute or hang up from the Lock Screen via a Live Activity.
Powered by Grok Voice
Cursor says voice chat runs on Grok Voice. Named voices in Voice settings include Ara, Eve, Leo, Rex, and Sal. The coding agent in the chat keeps using whatever model you already picked for it; Grok Voice handles listening and speaking.
With Privacy Mode on, Cursor says voice chat runs with zero data retention.
Voice chat vs dictation
| | Voice chat | Dictation | | --- | --- | --- | | What you get | A spoken reply from the agent | Text in the chat input | | Who sends the work | The voice agent can hand off tasks | You review and send | | Shortcut | Waveform button (no dedicated shortcut) | Cmd+Shift+Space in the IDE |
Earlier releases called dictation Voice Mode. That path still exists; voice chat is the new two-way conversation.
Limits and requirements Cursor states
- You need a signed-in Cursor account. Sessions authenticated with an API key cannot start voice chat.
- Microphone permission is required.
- By default, a call hangs up after about 10 minutes of silence from you while the agent has no work in progress.
- There is a daily limit on voice calls; Cursor tells you when you can call again if you hit it.
Confirmed vs not claimed
Confirmed from Cursor's own changelog and docs (November 6, 2026): realtime voice chat with agents is available on the listed surfaces, runs on Grok Voice, is separate from dictation, and carries the privacy and limit notes above.
Not claimed here: We have not seen a matching @cursor_ai or @xai X post for this drop as of this writing, and we are not inventing pricing, plan gates, or usage-meter numbers beyond what Cursor published on those pages. Update Cursor to try it, and treat the changelog and docs as the primary source.
