TL;DR: On October 31, Elon Musk said SpaceXAI is adding two more sites to Colossus 2, its data center campus around Southaven, Mississippi, and Memphis. "Gun Range" would hold about 220,000 Nvidia GB300 chips for training, and "Spam" about 200,000 GB300s for inference. Musk said Gun Range is on track for the end of November, Spam for December, and about 1.2 million Blackwell-generation chips across Colossus 2 by year end. These are Musk's targets, and no one has checked them independently.
What Musk said
In a reply on X on October 31, Musk said the sites called Macroharder and Minihard each have 220,000 GB300s with 800 gigabit network cards, set up for training. Gun Range, he said, "will have the same." Spam, which "used to house Hormel products," will have about 200,000 GB300s set up for inference, which means running a trained model rather than training it. He said that needs "much simpler networking and less than half the fiber" (Musk's post).
Outlets quoting his posts report the timing as Gun Range operational by the end of November and Spam in December (Business Insider), and about 1.2 million Blackwell GPUs at Colossus 2 by the end of 2026 (Data Center Dynamics).
The two new sites
- Gun Range is a former police and fire training site. Data Center Dynamics says it is two single-story buildings on a 55.9-acre parcel and will host a training cluster.
- Spam is a former warehouse that stored Hormel products, on about 53 acres. It is meant for inference.
Together that is about 420,000 chips. Data Center Dynamics lists the other Colossus 2 sites, Macrohard, Macroharder and Minihard, at 330,000, 220,000 and 220,000 GPUs. Adding those to the two new sites comes to roughly 1.19 million, which lines up with Musk's 1.2 million figure.
What is still unclear
- The numbers are Musk's. No filing or third party confirms the chip counts or the dates. DeSoto County News notes that the figures have not been independently verified, and Musk gave no street addresses.
- Chip generation. Musk's post says GB300 for both new sites. A Blocks and Files piece from November 4 describes Gun Range as GB200. We follow Musk's own post and flag the difference (Blocks and Files).
- Power and permits. The expansion comes while SpaceXAI's Southaven gas turbines face a Clean Air Act suit, and Mississippi regulators have sought about $6.1 million in potential penalties over construction permits at three sites (DeSoto County News). None of the reports says how the new sites would be powered.
Why it matters
Grok and Grok Bot run on this compute, and Musk has said serving Grok Bot is costly. Two sites that together would add about 420,000 chips are the clearest sign yet of how much capacity SpaceXAI plans to have by the end of the year. A November date for Gun Range is easy to check: if it is not running by early December, the schedule slipped. We will update this post if a filing, a permit or a photo confirms either site.
